Music in Communities

Music in Communities is a non-profit cooperative based in Canning, Nova Scotia, formed in 2019 to promote music literacy, present great live music, support under-represented voices, and strengthen communities through shared musical experiences. Their first project was the Canning Kitchen Party, a series of small concerts in different locations in the Annapolis Valley. Since then, they have developed many programs that serve diverse community members, and employ local working musicians who offer creative, musical ways to enrich these rural communities. Music in Communities hosts jam sessions and instructional groups, such as choirs, improvising sessions, ukulele groups, songwriting groups, and other drop-in events.

Kim Barlow is the director of MiC, and an accomplished musician. Creative and eccentric writer of songs, skillful on guitar and clawhammer banjo, Barlow has recorded six albums of her own work and many collaborations. Her 2019 recording, How to Let Go was nominated for a Nova Scotia Music Award for Folk Recording of the Year. Collaborations include duo Spring Breakup, with Mathias Kom of the Burning Hell and stringband Ida Red, a foot-stomping collective started with Gaspereau songster Heather Kelday. Accolades include Juno nominations for her album Gingerbread, and with stringband Annie Lou.
