Sustainable Futures National Gathering 2024

CNMN is thrilled to announce that its next national gathering will take place in Tkaronto/Toronto from February 16–19, 2024. The Sustainable Futures National Gathering follows in the footsteps of CNMN’s Forums, and marks our 15th national event.

Sustainable Futures aims to reflect collectively on what lies ahead for creative music and sound creators, and presenters and supporters. Together we explore how to  respond to the climate emergency and foster resilience in the face of increasing economic instability and precarity. The National Gathering follows up on CNMN’s Sustainable Futures Regional Meetings, digging deeper into the questions , concerns, knowledge and vision that participants have shared. The Gathering offers participants three and a half days of presentations, panel and group discussions, workshops, improvisation sessions and concerts.

Featured presenters include Tanya Kalmanovitch, Casey Koyczan, Rory McLeod (Xenia Concerts), Jessica McMann and the Participatory Creative Music Hub. A full roster of Sustainable Futures presenters and performers will be announced in the coming months.

As with our past Forum events, an important part of the programming comes from our Open Call. This year we are soliciting presentations, workshops and performances that engage with one of the two Sustainable Futures themes: Ecology & Economy. Both have their roots in the Greek work oikos (home/earth/dwelling). What does it mean to cultivate good housekeeping, relationships and stewardship in the creative music and sound sector? CNMN will cover and arrange successful applicants’ travel and accommodations, and pay a fee ($200 for presentations, $250–500 for workshops and $300 for performance). Remote presentations and performances are accepted! Apply here! Deadline September 24, 2024

Open Call applications will be reviewed by a jury consisting of: two members of the Sustainable Futures Planning group, one of the two outside consultants for Sustainable Futures programming, and one of the Sustainable Futures invited presenters. CNMN encourages a wide variety of applications and applicants. For more information on CNMN’s position on Equity & Access, please see our Policy and Action Plan.
