Community Music School of Waterloo Region

The Community Music School of Waterloo Region (CMSWR) is based in Waterloo, Ontario, and since 2012, the school has provided music education and all its benefits to kids in the community who can’t access it. In collaboration with community supporters, their programs develop kids’ musical skills, creativity, confidence, and love for music.

The school aims to put students first, and their volunteer teachers share the personal and musical journeys of their students, fostering safe spaces to learn, grow, and thrive.

Caroline Hissa, Executive Director, is a community music leader and passionate advocate for the impact communal music-making has on young people and communities. Caroline holds a Master of Arts in Community Music from Wilfrid Laurier University, in addition to a Master of Christian Studies from Regent College at the University of British Columbia. She began playing the piano when she was seven years old and has since played the piano, the saxophone and the oboe in numerous community bands and orchestras.

Investing in her community is a value that Caroline holds near and dear to her heart. She has sat on the City of Kitchener’s Arts & Culture Advisory Committee and is involved in community projects ranging from gardens to welcoming newcomers and refugees.
